about my fourth grade teacher
as I passed an all you can eat Indian restaurant
we studied India in history
Calcutta, Bombay, the Ganges
throngs, bongs, gongs
songs, sarongs
gurus, yogis, yoga
sadhus too
I wish she would have shown
one of those Louis Malle documentaries
that would have been interesting
but I was 10 or 11 so maybe it wouldn’t have been
and we had a lunch that featured Indian food
curry this and that
I think everything was curry
no wait, there was alu gobi whatever the hell that was
but I was 10 or 11, I wanted hamburgers or hotdogs
all the kids hated the food except her
i think she ate most of it
I was scarred for life
I still don’t want any Indian food, I don’t think I’ve ever tried it again
I give her credit for trying at least
we went outside to play—speaking of playing
In India there’s a country club called Royal Calcutta Golf Club
the British started it in 1829
it’s still around and I’d like to play it some time
if I’m ever in the neighborhood of India which I seriously doubt
I ever will be
I have been in Indiana but that’s not the same is it
