Erotomania is considered a type of a delusional disorder and is a rather uncommon paranoid condition...one that we have seen in movies like ‘Fatal Obsession’ or ‘Play Misty For Me’...it is characterized by an individual having delusions of another person being infatuated with her...or him...this type of disorder though is most often seen in females...ones that are generally shy (though not always), and dependent...the object of their delusions is usually a male...one that may be unattainable...this may because of a higher social status (station in life), their financial well-being...they may be married already or seeing someone else exclusively...or maybe the other party is just not interested... often times, the object of the obsession is someone who the patient has never even met...or they could even be dead...or imaginary...the obsessor will see ‘signs’ that the other person is interested in them, although they really aren’t...many times the onset of erotomania is sudden and the obsession is chronic...their obsession may include stalking and in some cases, even resulted in violence...the prognosis for the obsessed can vary from case to case...sometimes medicine is helpful...or psychotherapy...or jail after an unwanted act...or sometimes the obsession will just fade away or stop immediately.
