Glossolalia, otherwise
known as ‘speaking in tongues is a phenomenon in which people appear to speak
in languages that are unknown to them…it is an incomprehensible speech in an
imaginary language or babbling some might say…and it sometimes occurs in a trance
like state, or during an episode of religious ecstasy and inspired by a divine
like state, or less religious in nature perhaps…schizophrenia. …glossolalists
as the practictioners of this practice are called, believe that the
Pentecostal/charismatic glossolalia that is practiced today is the
"speaking in tongues" as described in the New Testament…they have the
belief that it is some kind of miraculous charism or spiritual gift that has
been bestowed upon them... they also claim that these tongues can be both real
languages that have not been learned or what is called a "language of the
spirit"… a "heavenly language", or maybe even the language of
angels…as mentioned before, this practice is often found in the Pentecostal
church and their followers, but it can be found in other religions too such as
shamanism and paganism.
