There was a young man
who was searching for happiness. He asked where it could be found and was told
it was at the end of the rainbow in the sky. So he mounted his horse and set
off. First he had to find a rainbow. On a spring afternoon he spied a rainbow
in the valley. He got on his horse and rode as fast as possible to reach the
end. He kept riding and riding until his horse was exhausted and he had to
stop. He looked and he had grown no closer to the end of the rainbow. He tried
this several times with the same result. An old chief saw the despondent man
and asked him what was wrong. The young man explained the situation. The old
chief said, “Why such a foolish pursuit? You can find all the happiness in the
rainbow itself. There is no need to reach the end of it to have happiness in
your heart.”
