What is a Daoist? I personally
don’t worry about such a label. Almost anything with an –ist applied indicates
we seek to identify with a larger group; a group that most likely trots out its
dogma and/or its customs and rituals and expects us to follow. Following the
way of the Dao is not a matter of dress, a ritualized behavior, or any other
kind of stipulation. It’s not about listening to people in fancy robes with
‘lineage’ telling us what to think or do. Being about the Dao is being about
following a philosophical approach to
life that emphasizes freedom, peace, love and a respect for others and the
earth. We need to find the Dao that flows within and cultivate it and use it in
our own unique manner. Only then can we really reach our true potential.
