Going through Arizona on our way to the Grand Canyon, our bus
driver mentions the people who like a remote lifestyle and points out their homes
which are far off the road. They are difficult to see. Their usually ramshackle
houses are not welcoming. Parked by the house is usually an old rusting car or
truck. I thought this was a Hollywood cliché, but it is true. They are
self-sufficient these people, often hauling their own water to their house
among other things. They live many miles from any kind of medical care. It is
easy to romanticize this lifestyle, one of great independence but I imagine it
is somewhat of a difficult way. Yet, it is their way, the way they have chosen,
just as we have chosen our way.
