The
Empty Boat
Who can free himself of achievement and fame, then descend and be lost amidst the masses of men? He will flow like the Dao, unseen. He will go about like life itself, with no name or no home. He is simple without. To others, he is a fool. His steps leave no trace, he has no power, he achieves nothing. He has no reputation. Since he judges no one, no one can judge him. Such is the perfect man whose boat is empty. – Chuang Tzu
Means
and Ends
The purpose of a
fish trap is to catch fish and when the fish have been caught, the trap is
forgotten. The purpose of words is to express ideas. When the ideas have been
grasped, the words are then forgotten. Where can I find a man who has forgotten
all the words, for he is the one I wish to speak with. – Chuang Tzu
