This begins the 81 Days of Tao segment. Today we look at Tao Te Ching Verse 1
The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao
The name that can be named is not the eternal Name.
The unnamable is the eternally real.
Naming is the origin of all particular things.
Free from desire, you realize the mystery.
Caught in desire, you see only the manifestations.
Yet mystery and manifestations arise from the same source.
This source is called darkness.
Darkness within darkness.
The gateway to all understanding.
Comment: Who are you? Who is Roshi Hogan? What is Tao? Who am I is one of best questions. Gazing into mirror, what stares back at you? Is it you? Or just body that you are using for a while? Do you even want to know who you are?
The truth may scare or disappoint us. Often we live lives of deception to others and ourselves. Our names, our bodies are not us. Tao is not Tao. These are merely labels and illusions. It is easy and convenient to label. It is inconvenient and hard to go past labels and see beyond.
